New industrial area in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip
The Mayor of Rafah Province d. Ahmed al-Sufi, the municipality of Rafah has completed the equipping of an industrial zone in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, in the western region of the governorate with an area of 100 dunums, with an estimated increase of 300 dunums, after work on the first phase of local factories in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Sufi confirmed that the crews of the projects unit of the Ministry of Local Government in cooperation with the municipality of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip had completed the first phase of the project to establish a craft industrial zone, financed by the Kuwaiti grant worth US $2 million.
Hanover Chief Executive Tamer Wadiya said that the industrial zone project would be the first nucleus for the development of the local Palestinian economy in Gaza on the one hand, and to raise the level of work in the governorates of Rafah and Khanyounis in the south of the Gaza Strip, which would provide the vital area and economic strength, especially as Rafah is marginalized governorate, with human and young crews.
The businessman (Al-Wadiya) confirmed that working in the industrial zone will have a significant and tangible impact on the local economy, especially since Rafah is the gateway to the Gaza Strip to the outside world, and there are two main crossings (Rafah crossing and Kerem abu-Salem commercial crossing), and it has wide open areas that make The manufacturing process is more easy and smooth than crowded and border areas, which poses obstacles to local industries.
He revealed that businessmen and developers in the new industrial city would speak with the international community and relevant States in order to support the industrial city and establish international protection for it, in anticipation of a threat to the industrial city, especially in the Gaza Strip’s circumstances over the last years.
On a parallel line, a number of businessmen and investors in the Gaza Strip met with the mayor of Rafah at the municipality’s headquarters south of the Gaza Strip. The mayor reviewed the action plan of the new industrial city and its working mechanism, as well as the facilities granted to the industrial city that will help to promote the economy and raise the hands of workers in Rafah.
