Nael Al-Barghouti has a court hearing tomorrow after 42 years in Israeli jails

Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) on Monday said that a court hearing will be held for captive Nile Barghouti, who has been detained for more than 42 years, on Tuesday, May 10, to rule on a petition filed by his lawyer five years ago for his release.

(PPS) said in a press release that the detainee Barghouti (64 years), from the town of Cooper in Ramallah, was arrested for the first time in 1978 and sentenced to life imprisonment, 18 years and released in a prisoner swap in 2011, lived out for only 32 months, and was rearrested by the occupation in June 2014, sentenced to 30 months imprisonment on 10 May 2015.

It added that after the expiration of his sentence (30) months reinstated his previous sentence of life and (18) years, on the pretext of having a “secret file” until now.

It asserted that the Barghouti prisoner was serving the longest period of detention in the history of the captive movement, around more than 42 years, 34 years had been spent continuously.

According to sources, he had lost the majority of his family during his years of detention, the latest being his brother Omar Barghouti (Abu Asif).

The occupation authorities still arrest (49 Palestinians), who were freed on the 2011 deal and were rearrested in 2014, reinstated their previous rulings, and confirmed them in the Supreme Court.

(18 Palestinian prisoners) remain to await as the Barghouti prisoner, regarding their petitions filed years ago against the reinstatement of their prior rulings, and calling for their release.
