Two dead, 120 wounded in Abu Dhabi gas explosion
Initial sources said, “showed that 64 people sustained minor injuries, 56 others were moderately injured and two people died.”
Monday’s blast caused a massive fire that destroyed the facades of six constructions and several shops before being brought under control, sources said.
Four of the destroyed buildings have been “safely” evacuated, with efforts underway to find temporary housing for their residents “until the buildings are fully secured,” police said.
Photos released by Abu Dhabi police showed first responders caring for a person on a stretcher and debris and broken glass scattered across the pavement.
A witness man said that he heard two explosions around lunchtime.
“The first sound was faint and people started calling firefighters and police,” said the man, who was not known.
“Then soon, there was a big explosion. It was a really great sound. The windows shook and in some offices the windows shattered ”.
The authorities have given no indication of foul play.
However, the UAE has been on high alert since a Houthi drone and missile strike killed three oil workers in Abu Dhabi on Jan.17.
