Borrell of EU in Tehran for talks on relaunching the 2015 Iranian nuclear pact
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell met with a top Iranian diplomat on Saturday, Iranian state TV reported, as the bloc seeks to break a dead-end between Tehran and Washington on restoring a nuclear deal.
The US said in early June that it awaits a constructive response from Iran on the restoration of the 2015 deal – under which Iran limited its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions without “extraneous” problems.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian last week called on Washington, which pulled out of the deal and then imposed crippling sanctions on Tehran under the Trump administration in 2018, to “be realistic.”
It appeared on the verge of awakening in March when the EU, which is coordinating the negotiations, invited ministers to Vienna to sell it after 11 months of indirect talks between Tehran and the administration of President Joe Biden.
But talks have since stalled, mainly due to Tehran’s insistence that Washington removes the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), its elite security force, from the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) list. of the United States.
Two officials, one Iranian and one European told Reuters prior to Borrell’s trip that “two issues remained to be resolved, one on sanctions,” comments the Iranian foreign ministry has neither denied nor confirmed.
France, part of the deal, on Friday urged Tehran to take advantage of Borrell’s visit to restore the pact while it remained possible.
