Five Palestinians detained at Damascus Gate clashes
Five Palestinians were detained at Damascus Gate clashes, for the fifth night in a row, Israeli forces on Wednesday night attacked Palestinians who assembled at Bab al-Amoud (Damascus Gate) in the occupied city of East Jerusalem, according to local sources.
Sources reported that a special unit of the Israeli troops imprisoned two young men after attacking them, while the troops arrested three others from Bab al-Amoud, also comprehended as Damascus Gate, one of the major gates of the Old City of Jerusalem.
It said that since the start of the month of Ramadan last Saturday, Israeli forces have detained 38 Jerusalemites, some of whom are still in custody, while others have been released on the conditions of being refused entry into Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Old City of Jerusalem and charged fines on them.
Israeli settlers on Wednesday, directed by extremist Rabbi Yehuda Glick, stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque on the morning of the fifth day of Ramadan, under the security of the occupation troops.
The recent tensions are reminiscent of the 2021 May and Ramadan tensions over the Israeli settler seizure of Palestinian property in Sheik Jarrah and encroachments upon the mosque compound.
In the 2021 Ramadan month, Jerusalem witnessed protests and night-time clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian prayers, with tensions ascending over the Israeli decision to ban people from sitting on the stairs outside Bab al-Amoud under the guise of enforcing the coronavirus rules, and its decision to disconnect the power supply to the call to prayer at the mosque compound.
