Strong threat from China to America for this reason
The Financial Times reported on Saturday that China issued strong warnings to U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration about a possible visit by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August.
The report stated that the warnings were much stronger than threats Beijing had made when it was dissatisfied with the United States‘ actions or policy on Taiwan which China considered part of its territory.
The newspaper said that this private speech suggested a possible military response.
The National Security Council and the United States Department of State declined to comment on this report. China’s foreign ministry has not yet responded to a Reuters request for comment on Sunday.
China is intensifying its military activity around Taiwan in an effort to pressure the democratically elected Government there to accept China’s sovereignty.
The Government of Taiwan stated that only 23 million of the island’s inhabitants can decide their own future and that, despite its desire for peace, it will defend itself if attacked.
The newspaper had reported on July 18 that Pelosi planned to visit Taiwan in August.
After a day, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan would seriously undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the United States would bear the consequences of its response.
On Wednesday, Biden said he planned to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping by the end of the month and appeared to question Pelosi’s reported trip to Taiwan.
“I think the military said it is not a good idea right now, but I don’t know what the situation is,” Biden told reporters.
