At least 25 dead in Kentucky floods
Kentucky Governor Andy Bashir said Saturday that at least 25 people have died as a result of devastating floods that have hit the state.
Bashir tweeted, “We received shocking news. Around eastern Kentucky today, we’re still in search and rescue. Our death toll has risen to 25, and this figure is a candidate for an increase. ”
According to information currently available, 4 children are among the victims.
Authorities said it could be weeks before all the victims were found and that it was unclear how many people were missing because there was no mobile phone reception in large parts of the disaster area.
Flash flooding and landslides followed heavy rains in Kentucky and its neighboring states of Virginia and West Virginia.
Many people were surprised by the floods on Thursday night.
Hundreds of people have already been rescued using boats and helicopters.
US President Joe Biden has approved Kentucky’s request for a major disaster zone, allowing federal funding to help with recovery efforts.
Last December, more than 70 people died amid devastating tornadoes that hit the state.
