China: “our military exercises in our waters are transparent”
China on Monday asserted its position on military maneuvers around Taiwan, China’s Foreign Ministry said that Taiwan is part of China and that Beijing conducts regular military exercises “in our waters” in an open, transparent, and professional manner.
A spokesman for the Ministry, Wang Wen Bin, said that the departments concerned had also made announcements in a timely manner, in line with domestic and international law.
He replied to the question of whether China’s ongoing military exercises complied with international law and whether a new warning would be stated to civilian vessels and aircraft.
The Chinese military announced new maneuvers on Monday around Taiwan, after days of drills to protest against Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei last week.
China organized the largest military exercises near Taiwan, which it regards as part of its territory, with aircraft and warships.
The war games were defined by Beijing as a “necessary” response to Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the self-governing democratic island.
But Washington felt that China’s leaders “chose to overreact.”
The Chinese army announced that the exercises included a “conventional missile attack” in waters east of Taiwan.
China’s Xinhua news agency reported that the Chinese military “launched more than 100 warplanes involving fighters and bombers” during the exercises.
