Canadian authorities announced that an explosion occurred Friday at a refinery on the Canadian island of Newfoundland, injuring eight people, one of them seriously.
Gendarmerie spokeswoman, Caporal Julian Garland, said rescue teams had dealt with a “small explosion” shortly after 4:00 pm (0630 GMT) at the refinery in Cam Bay Chance.
Police later added that eight people were taken to hospital, “some of them seriously.”
The police, who first reported that six people were injured, said one of them was “seriously injured”.
The industrial site, operated by Praia Renewable Fuels, was undergoing conversion work to specialize in biofuels.
An investigation was opened to find out the causes of the explosion.
