American series includes Indian, Pakistani division
We don’t often find a character in an American series that talks about India and Pakistan but Ms Marvel appears to be working to change that discourse.
The border line, which Sana-Jedda, the heroine of the series Kamala Khan, tells of, refers to the 1947 partition that led to the establishment of two independent states, India and Pakistan.
Critics praised the 6-episode series for portraying the traumatic event with great sensitivity.
That partition, at the end of British colonial rule of India, constituted the largest human exodus in history away from war and famine, resulting in approximately 12 million refugees, and the killing of between 500,000 and 1 million people in religious violence.
The series tells the story of Kamala, the main character played by Iman Vilani, a Pakistani-American teenager who transforms into a superhero.
The character first appeared in a comic strip series in 2014. In it, Kamala’s supernatural abilities are activated by a secret alien gene, with a mutagenic gas.
In the series, Kamala derives her superpowers from a mysterious bracelet belonging to her great-grandmother, Aisha, who disappeared during the partition.
Civil war, division and chronic problems, the story of the independence of India and Pakistan.
Seven defining moments in the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the “rebel” who defied British colonialism.
People in the show carry a legacy across the (Indo-Pakistani) border, it is literally a gateway to the past for younger generations who know nothing about the catastrophic events of 1947, and it can be a stepping stone into the past, and that is exactly what happens with Kamala [in the series],” she said.
Not only does the split act as a metaphorical backdrop or a faint memory in the series, it helps Kamala understand herself and her supernatural abilities.
