Biden comments on Elon Musk’s job cuts

The US President said Musk’s concerns about the economy could point to problems at his own company

US President Joe Biden ignored crises about the economy expressed by Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk earlier this week. Speaking to journalists in Delaware on Friday, Biden noted that while Musk is talking about recession and job cuts, other manufacturers are thriving, which could indicate a problem with Tesla, not the economy.

“As Elon Musk talks about it, Ford is overwhelmingly increasing its investments… Ford is increasing investments and building new electric vehicles. Six thousand new employees, union workers, I might add, in the MidwestBiden said, while citing the former Chrysler Corporation’s successes in producing electric vehicles and tech giant Intel’s recent move to create 20,000 new computer chip jobs.

“Well, you know, good luck [Musk’s] Journey to the moon,” Biden added.

Elon Musk warns of major layoffs at TeslaBiden’s comments came a day after the Tesla CEO wrote in an email to executives that he had a “very bad feeling about the US economy,‘ and announced that the company would be shedding 10% of its workforce. Musk has been warning of an impending US recession for some time, saying: “is actually a good thing” and “some bankruptcies must happen,‘ while taking steps to prevent problems in his own business.

Musk was quick to respond to Biden’s comments, tweeting, “Thank you Mr. President!‘ with a link pointing to NASA’s April 2021 award of a $2.9 billion contract to SpaceX to build a spacecraft designed to take astronauts to the moon.

This isn’t the first time Musk and Biden have engaged in verbal sparring. Musk has criticized the president and complained about his lack of recognition of Tesla as Biden openly favors GM and Ford in his bid to transform the country into an electric vehicle powerhouse. Earlier this year, after months of complaints from Musk, Biden finally acknowledged Tesla, calling it “the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles in our country.”
