Google to slow down YouTube in Russia
US tech giant Google announced several Russian ISPs of methods to terminate their contracts to keep Google Global Cache servers, RBC reported on Thursday, citing telecom market sources.
The servers in inquiry are used to speed up the loading of Google pages, including YouTube content, and to decrease the amount of cross-border data traffic by temporarily storing uploaded data, thereby decreasing network infrastructure expenses.
A representative of Orenburg-based provider Radiosvyaz confirmed to RBC that those servers were shut down on May 19, and a message was accepted a few days later. The source didn’t explain the causes for the shutdown but hinted that Google may have considered the operator to be diminutive.
The same message was received by the MFTI Telecom provider, according to another source. The source linked the server shutdown to the provider being placed on the US blacklist of Russian companies as part of sanctions.
The magazine reported that it did not receive confirmation of the takedown from Google.
Agents of Rostelecom, Russia’s largest Internet provider, as well as MTS and Megafon told RBC that Google’s servers are still working as expected.
Before this month, Google’s Russian subsidiary, Google LLC, filed for bankruptcy. According to a company spokesperson, it is no longer able to provide the work of the Russian office due to the blocking of the company’s bank account following a legal dispute with the NTV Television Company. However, a Google agent later announced that the company would resume providing Russian users with its free services, such as the search engine, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play, and others, despite the bankruptcy of the Russian subsidiary.
