Statistics Korea’s data asserted that South Korea will become the country with the largest proportion of people aged 65 or over in the world in 2044 due to rapid aging.
The data, released on Monday, expected that the proportion of the elderly in South Korea will represent 36.7 percent of the total population in 2044, surpassing Japan, the world’s most aging country by 36.5 percent, according to the South Korean Yonhap News Agency.
Data were compiled based on the United Nations World Population Prospects and the South Korean Statistics Agency’s 2020-2070 Korean population projection.
The data showed that South Korea will age at a faster rate, while its total population began to decline last year amid a chronic decline in birth rates.
The proportion of people aged 65 or over is likely to reach 17.5 percent of the total population this year and rise to 46.4 percent in 2070.
The country became an aging society in 2017, with the proportion of such people exceeding 14%.
The data showed that the proportion of the working-age population, or people between the ages of 15 and 64, peaked at 73.4 percent in 2012 and will further decrease to 71 percent in 2022. This percentage is likely to drop to 46.1 percent in 2070.
