One person has been killed and rescue teams are searching for nine others missing after a small plane crashed off the coast of Washington state in the northwest of the United States on Sunday, the US Coast Guard said.
The seaplane was flying from Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands at the Canada-US border to Tacoma International Airport in Seattle when it crashed near Puget Sound, north of its destination.
“Officials of the Coast Guard Sector Command Center in Puget Sound have received a report of a seaplane crash with nine people and one child,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.
“Rescue teams found a dead person at the site, and the search is still underway for nine missing persons,” the statement added, adding that the cause of the accident had not yet been determined.
Flightradar24, a website that specializes in tracking flights, said it recorded the last signal from a 55-year-old Havilland Canada DHC-3 helicopter, a single-engine helicopter, in the area at 15:00. 05 local time at an altitude of 30.5 meters.
