The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, described the situation in the Gaza Strip—as he referred to it amid what he called a genocide committed by Israel—as “absolutely horrific.”
In a press statement, Lazzarini said that international attention to Gaza has significantly declined since Israel began its military strikes on Iran on June 13.
He added, “Israeli attacks continue daily in Gaza, and civilians are still being forcibly displaced,” pointing out that people feel completely trapped due to the aid system imposed by Tel Aviv.
He said, “People are asking: should I let my family starve, or risk my life to obtain humanitarian aid? We are facing a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.”
Lazzarini called for an immediate de-escalation in a region that “cannot afford another war,” expressing hope that a ceasefire would pave the way for renewed efforts toward a truce in Gaza, securing the release of detainees, lifting the siege, and ensuring the uninterrupted entry of large-scale humanitarian aid.
UNRWA confirmed it had demonstrated its ability to combat hunger during previous ceasefires, and that humanitarian aid is ready and waiting at Gaza’s borders for entry.
