Car ploughs into crowds in Berlin, leaving people dead, injured
At least one person has been left dead and more injured on Wednesday after a car crashed into a crowd in the district of Charlottenburg in Berlin .
According to police, at around 10.30am on Wednesday morning, a car left the road and struck a crowd of people on Tauentzienstrasse, a major shopping street in Charlottenburg, close to Kurfürstendamm. According to the Berliner Morgenpost, the vehicle apparently drove across the pavement and then into the window of a Douglas drugstore.
At least one person died in the incident, while a further eight were injured. Initial reports suggest as many as 30 people were injured, but neither figure has yet been confirmed. Police arrested the alleged driver on site, but a spokesperson said it was still unclear whether it was a traffic accident or an intentional act.
Incident close to site of 2016 Christmas market attack
The incident took place close to Breitscheidplatz, where 11 people were killed and dozens more injured in 2016 after an Islamist extremist hijacked a truck and drove it into a crowded Christmas market.
