Russia building two nuclear reactors in Hungary
The Hungarian Foreign Minister confirmed that the giant Russian company specializing in nuclear energy “Rosatom” will begin construction of two new nuclear reactors in Hungary in the coming weeks.
The agreement between Russia and the EU member state in 2014, is aimed at expanding the existing “PAX” nuclear power plant.
Recall that the Russian nuclear industry has not been subjected to EU sanctions imposed due to Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine.
Steps to isolate Russia and impose sanctions on its oil and gas exports also did not receive unconditional support from Hungary.
The Pax plant currently generates 40% of Hungary’s electricity needs.
The nuclear power plant will see its production capacity more than double.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister stated that in this way they will guarantee energy security in Hungary in the long run and protect the Hungarians from wild fluctuations in energy prices.
He added that the two nuclear reactors may be ready for service by the beginning of 2030.
Russia itself finances the bulk of this controversial project, which costs 12.4 billion dollars.
In the aftermath of the war in Ukraine, many EU countries tried to reduce their dependence on Russian energy supplies.
